Indications - in adults for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). - in adults for the treatment of systemic sclerosis associated interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD). Nintedanib is a triple angiokinase inhibitor that targets receptor tyrosine kinases involved in the regulation of angiogenesis: fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR) and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR) which have also been implicated in the pathogenesis of fibrosis and IPF. In both phase III trials nintedanib reduced the decline in lung function by approximately 50% over one year. It was approved by the US FDA in October 2014 and authorised in Europe in January 2015.
